• A series of CuPd/C catalysts with low Pd loading are successfully prepared using a continuous flow method. • CuPd alloys enhance C=O adsorption in HMF and suppress furan ring over-hydrogenation. • The 3%Cu0.8%Pd/C catalyst attains 97.5% DMF selectivity under mild conditions with a remarkably high TOF of 250.2 h-1.
