• Coupled chemo-mechanical control enables fuel-cell-like Al-air operation • A replaceable pouch removes Al(OH)3 with spent Al and preserves the hydrogel electrolyte • Microdosing maintains ionic transport and raises areal capacity nearly 10-fold • Reusable hardware raises system energy density to 550 Wh kg-1
