Abstract

There are many methods of PID controller tuning in the literature usually based on knowledge of the process parameters. In practice, process parameters are only approximately known and are changing with time, operating point, etc. It is useful to know the effect of these process parameter changes on the quality of control. In complex processes, the manipulated variable for one loop is often a disturbance to another loop. This makes it desirable to minimize not only set point-process variable error but also manipulated variable changes. An approach is presented which takes account of controller output swings as well as the error between the set point and the process measurement. The effects of adding a minor time constant and dead time to the simple lag process and of change from the initial values used for tuning are shown. The effects on the optimum performance index, optimum gain, and overshoot are included. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd, All rights reserved.
