• Temporal accumulation and surface heterogeneity jointly drive shading cooling. • 3-hour consecutive shading consistently reduce LST across sunlight periods. • Increasing surface permeability does not always enhance shading-induced cooling. • Net radiation dominates shading cooling over surface resistance.
