• Machine-learning identifies a “quickly-evolving” journal cluster with near-exponential growth. • Citation inflation is concentrated in a small network, not ecosystem membership broadly. • Top 4 authors in the cluster made 1006 self-citations and 803 mutual citations post-ecosystem. • 4 Ecosystem journals with PubPeer-flagged editors show a 104% citation increase post-ecosystem.
