Copper-mediated direct chalcogenation of exopolyhedral CH bonds in o-carboranes was established under weakly basic conditions. A series of cage C-substituted o-carborane derivatives containing exopolyhedral CS and CSe bonds was accessed with high levels of position- and chemoselectivity control. Remarkably, the CH activation reaction provides efficient means to facile substitution chemistry at inherently inert cage CH vertices in carboranes.
