• Decreased roughness shifted boiling curves rightward, reducing heat transfer by 50%. • Reduced roughness inhibited large coalesced bubbles and increased CHF by 4.7–20.5%. • Reduced roughness decreased film oscillation height, increased frequency in MEB. • A new model for predicting heat transfer in MEB was developed.
