Cross-role transfer of artificial intelligence capabilities: The impact of generative artificial intelligence on Airbnb listing demand

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is reshaping digital platforms, yet little is known about how it enhances hosts' capabilities and shapes market demand in peer-to-peer accommodation. This study examines how hosts’ proficiency in using large language models (a prominent form of GAI), acquired through their off-platform occupations, affects demand for their peer-to-peer listings. Specifically, we construct a novel measure of host GAI penetration and leverage the rollout of ChatGPT as a quasi-natural experiment. Using 32,773 listing–quarter observations from Airbnb and a generalized difference-in-differences design, we find that host GAI penetration significantly increases listing demand. This effect is amplified by service availability signals, including higher response efficiency and response rate. Mediation analyses further show that GAI enhances demand by increasing the information volume and diversity of listing and host descriptions, thereby improving information architecture. The findings highlight cross-role technological capability transfer as a key mechanism shaping platform performance.
