• There is a need for more evidence on drivers of food choice for an under-researched food group – vegetables – particularly in the Pacific. • We contribute participatory evidence on the lived experience of Fijians of food environments in a range of physical and socio-economic contexts. • Cultivation, climate challenges, family/peer influence, and cultural norms around food sharing most influenced people's food experiences. • Backyard gardening is the major policy approach addressing vegetable consumption; participants desire more support in achieving this.
