• Novel valorization of hazelnut pruning residues for biohydrogen production via dark fermentation. • Hazelnut prunings cellulose accessibility increased up to 31.5%, improving dark-fermentation performance. • Enzymatic hydrolysis after LHW pretreatment raised hydrogen content up to 27.0% of total biogas. • Mixing untreated biomass with hydrolysate reduced hydrogen production by 3.1%. • Shorter inoculum heat treatment (15 min at 100 °C) reduced working time by 75.0% and enhanced gas output.
