Starting from a biosemiotic perspective, my aim in this paper is to review David Bohm's formulation of soma-significance. First of all, I consider that this formulation is innovative regarding the physical-mental relationship since it presents an understanding of meaning as a transitive property across different levels of physical reality. As I will explore in this paper, this understanding deepens the naturalistic perspective in the sense that it moves away from conditio humana, i.e., the idea that meaning is anthropologically centered. Although it is a philosophical virtue of Bohm's soma-significance formulation, I think that (1) we need more than an insight into the relationship between the physical and the mental to make sense of meaning; and (2) the fact that meaning is a transitive property does not imply it is ubiquitous in the universe. These two points drive my reviewing of Bohm's soma-significance formulation as they are converted into an inspiring challenge. From a biosemiotic perspective, I think we need the notion of 'threshold' to make sense of meaning as a sign of life instead of taking it to be something that one finds ubiquitously throughout the universe.
