• Fraser-Suzuki deconvolution resolves five overlapping DTG stages in SmS2-x. • Multiphase homologous mixtures exhibit a relaxation stage absent in ordered Sm10S19. • All decomposition trajectories converge to a single Sm4S7 intermediate. • Coexisting homologous phases produces Urbach tails in optical absorption spectra. • First experimental bandgaps of samarium polysulfides are reported.
