• A defect-mediated technique was developed for battery-grade graphite recycling. • This method is especially practical for graded recycling of graphite from LIBs. • Defect-mediated efficacy and interfacial mechanistic insight were clarified. • Superior performance of recovered graphite indicates viable closed-loop recycling. • This low-carbon strategy achieves a remarkable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
