This letter proposes a multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) high-scanning-rate coupled-resonator antenna at the millimeter-wave frequency band for 2-D multitarget localization and heartbeat rate monitoring. The designed coupled-resonator antenna is able to vertically scan beam across a 47° angular range as frequency changes from 60 GHz to 64 GHz, while 3Tx×4Rx MIMO technology can achieve digital beam scanning in the horizontal direction. Therefore, the proposed MIMO coupled-resonator antenna can achieve 2-D multitarget localization and heart rate monitoring. By integrating the designed MIMO antenna prototype into a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar system, four experimental examples are provided for proof-of-concept demonstration. The results show that the proposed antenna can successfully localize multiple targets in 2-D space and accurately monitor heartbeat rates.
