• A topology optimization-based dual-fin–tube integrated reactor (DFTR@TO) is proposed. • Structural and topological parameters are optimized for hydrogenation efficiency. • The volumetric hydrogen storage rate is introduced as a key MHR performance measure. • UCVM delivers the most accurate hydriding kinetics among classical and modified models.
