• Bird-exclusion nets created visible bycatch hotspots in an inland agro-mosaic landscape. • Net design explained detected bycatch risk better than production system alone. • Thinner twine and smaller mesh were linked to higher conditional bycatch severity. • Faster inspection and rescue may reduce mortality after birds become entangled.
