Designing for rhythm: tempo-setting infrastructures and the temporal conditions of digital life

Digital systems increasingly function as tempo-setting infrastructures that organize the temporal conditions under which cognition, communication, learning, and participation occur. Although research in human-computer interaction, platform studies, and AI ethics has extensively examined privacy, fairness, transparency, engagement, and well-being, the temporal organization of digital life has received comparatively little attention as a distinct object of sociotechnical analysis. We argue that digital systems shape cognition by reorganizing the temporal conditions that structure attention, recovery, communication, learning, and coordination across everyday life. Integrating research from cognitive science, chronobiology, human-computer interaction, platform studies, and AI governance, we identify fi ve recurring temporal structures—interruption, recovery, communication, synchronization, and closure—that explain how digital systems reorganize the conditions supporting sustained cognitive and social functioning across work, education, and everyday life. Timing emerges as a structural property of sociotechnical systems that shapes how attention is sustained, communication is coordinated, learning is organized, and participation unfolds over time. The broader implication is that digital systems should be evaluated in terms of the temporal environments they create alongside the information they present and the decisions they support. As digital technologies increasingly organize the pace of everyday life, understanding their societal consequences requires understanding how they reorganize the temporal conditions that sustain cognition, communication, participation, and human agency.
