Abstract

Abstract

Despite growing scholarly attention to authenticity in tourism, existing research demonstrates significant limitations in measuring authenticity in agricultural heritage settings. These limitations manifest at three levels: theoretically, current approaches fail to capture the integration of tangible and intangible elements; methodologically, they inadequately address authenticity’s dynamic nature in living traditions; and practically, prevalent deductive approaches lack context sensitivity for effective site management. Through an innovative integration of grounded theory and quantitative methods, this study addresses these gaps by enabling the emergence of integrated authenticity dimensions, capturing dynamic authenticity processes, and developing context-sensitive measurements. Using Azheke Village (Yunnan, China) as a case study, we employed systematic grounded theory analysis of in-depth interviews, revealing five key dimensions of authenticity perception: ecological experience, cultural interaction, heritage reminiscence, personal reflection, and continuity of tradition. These dimensions were validated through a rigorous two-stage process combining expert review, pilot testing, and large-scale survey validation using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The resulting scale demonstrated robust psychometric properties. This study contributes by: (1) establishing a theoretical framework capturing integrated authenticity in agricultural heritage contexts, (2) developing a methodologically sound measurement approach addressing authenticity’s dynamic nature, and (3) providing practical guidance for enhancing visitor experiences while preserving cultural integrity.
