Multi-layered homogenized materials are promising candidates for practical applications in automotive manufacturing due to their excellent performance. Multi-layer metal deposition by fusion methods in additive manufacturing results in inhomogeneity in properties due to a higher thermal gradient across the layers during deposition. The present work explores a solid-state deposition method, namely, friction stir deposition, to develop a multi-layered 3D structure. The developed structure exhibited uniform thickness of each layer with no variation in chemical composition, microstructural features, and mechanical properties across the layers. It is proposed that, due to low rise in temperature and lower resultant thermal gradient during deposition, 3D structures with much better and uniform properties can be developed.
