• Poly(monoacryloxyethyl phosphate) was grafted onto a porous polyethylene substrate. • Ar atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment and next graft polymerization were used. • FT-IR spectra and microscopic observations confirmed the successful grafting. • The novel adsorbent with phosphate groups selectively adsorbed In(III) ions. • Langmuir-type isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were well-suited.
