Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) are high-brightness semiconductor lasers based on large-area coherent resonance at a singularity point of a two-dimensional photonic crystal. Here, we develop a high-power PCSEL-array module for applications in metal additive manufacturing, which is one of the promising fields in smart manufacturing. The fabricated module integrates a 2 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$ \times $</tex-math></inline-formula> 2 array of four 3-mm-diameter PCSELs and achieves a continuous-wave (CW) output power of 200 W. Furthermore, using this high-power PCSEL-array module, we demonstrate selective laser melting (SLM) of stainless steel powder. These results indicate the scalability of PCSEL arrays toward kilowatt-class and beyond, as well as their potential as compact, high-power laser sources for next-generation metal additive manufacturing systems.
