While many oxidases are both sufficiently active and selective, most oxidases are not sufficiently stable for chemical synthesis or large-scale processing. Several stresses, such as loss of flavin co-enzyme, overoxidation in presence of reactive oxygen species, or instability in presence of air/water interfaces if the co-substrate oxygen is supplied by sparging, are a burden fairly unique to oxidases.
