• Sub-chronic DEX exposure induces dose-dependent nephrotoxicity in rats. • DEX intoxication alters renal RAS and xenobiotic handling pathways. • DEX exposure promotes renal oxidative stress and inflammation. • Renal functions were compromised after DEX administration. • DEX exposure disrupts normal structure of renal tissues.
