• IPC staffing differed between free-standing and system-affiliated hospitals. • Free-standing hospitals had higher IP FTEs per 100 beds. • System-affiliated hospitals had greater analytic and administrative support. • IP staffing intensity decreased as hospital bed size increased. • Findings support updated IPC staffing models.
