• A systematic review has identified eight types of digital-enabled innovation ecosystems (DIE). • An intepretative framework has been developed that map the structure and typologies of DIEs. • Deep tech and DTs are driving the evolution of DIEs and their responses to grand challenges. • The research agenda links dynamics of the DIE to grand challenges and ecosystem governance.
