• The self-mode-locked Tm,Ho:YLF laser with GHz pulse repetition frequency is first realized. • The fundamental pulse repetition frequency is as high as 5.2 GHz. • The absorbed pump power threshold of continuous wave self-mode-locking is only 0.25 W. • The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical efficiency arrived 48.6% and 42.8%, respectively.
