• A bifunctional DES is first employed for astaxanthin production. • This DES enables single-step extraction and hydrolysis of astaxanthin esters to free astaxanthin. • The DES composed of 1,3-propanediamine and m-cresol is optimal for direct recovery of astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. • Ester bond cleavage is verified as the key mechanism for astaxanthin ester conversion. • The proposed method is rapid and efficient for astaxanthin extraction.
