• Disturbance intensity strongly increased tree community reorganization, elevating species temporal turnover and accelerating thermophilization across the Eastern U.S. FIA plots. • Baseline climate and forest structure explained more variation in compositional change than recent climate trends, indicating strong legacy controls on community trajectories. • Thermophilization was driven by a small set of species, with gains of warmer-affinity taxa and losses of colder-affinity taxa; some colder-affinity taxa persisted in high-latitude refugia.
