• The patterns and trends of water color across 3,209 global river mouths. • Global river mouths exhibited high spatial heterogeneity with a mean FUI of 17.76. • Small river mouths generally showed higher FUI than large ones. • FUI displayed an upward trend but with distinct regional and latitudinal variations. • Seasonal FUI peaked in summer, with declining trends predominating in winter.
