• Native and alien plants respond differently to island biogeography, climate, and anthropogenic disturbance. • Native plants are driven by island biogeography and climate, whereas alien plants are shaped by anthropogenic disturbance and biotic interactions. • The biotic acceptance hypothesis was supported on inhabited land-bridge islands. • Divergent indirect pathways of island area and isolation shape native and alien plant species richness.
