We investigate whether there is a difference in survey data quality based on the race of the respondent in the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), an interviewer-administered survey on U.S. household finances. We measure data quality as either the rate that respondents answer questions, or the rate that SCF staff edit inconsistent or unusual answers discovered in raw interview data in order to improve the final SCF data. Holding interview complexity fixed, for the most part we find data quality is similar between households of different races in the SCF. There is some evidence of worse data quality on average for Black or Hispanic households, relative to White or other race households, at the top of the income or wealth distributions.
