• Doping in 2D materials is as a significant strategy to alter the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties in advanced applications. • This review provides different doping mechanisms focusing on substitutional/intercalation doping and surface functionalization. • Effects of doping on band potentials, charge migration, electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties. • Exploring the applications of doped 2D heterostructures in electronics, optoelectronics, and electrochemical systems, photocatalysis. • Challenges and prospects in advancing the doping strategies and expanding the functionality of 2D heterostructures are addressed.
