• Soil carbon and nitrogen mineralization followed contrasting temporal patterns during litter decomposition. • Species richness showed limited effects on soil C and N mineralization, whereas variation among litter compositions exhibited clear stage-dependent patterns. • Carbon mineralization was most strongly associated with microbial biomass, whereas nitrogen mineralization was associated with litter, soil, and microbial variables.
