• Basin complex system were divided into three subsystems to analyze synergistic competition. • Sediment and economic benefits were synergy while ecological benefit was “inverted U-shape”. • Sediment benefits are most sensitive to water variation, especially in the case of dry years. • Ecological competition intensifies tenfold in dry years compared to other hydrological years. • Cascade reservoirs enhanced synergy in upstream and mitigated competition in downstream.
