• Surface tension ratio determines complete coalescence, partial coalescence, or drop ejection on air–liquid interfaces. • A critical surface tension ratio induces the Marangoni flow and suppresses partial coalescence. • Marangoni stress influences the liquid neck expansion and contraction dynamics under a sufficient surface tension gradient.
