Abstract

• A novel freely floating body suppresses liquid sloshing in rectangular tanks, reducing wave height across a broad frequency range. • The floating body introduces two new fluid–structure coupled resonant modes. • Under resonant conditions, system damping increases by 4–7 times, improving energy dissipation via body motion. • The body shows distinct motion patterns under different resonant modes, with pitch direction varying with frequency. • Drift instability occurs at higher water depths and amplitudes, showing unidirectional or reciprocating drift behaviors.
