• T-42H macroporous cation exchange resin effectively removes metal ions from NMP. • Optimal conditions: 5 ml·min–1 flow rate, 15 cm column height, two-stage cyclic adsorption. • Best regeneration: HCl 1 mol·L–1 at 10 ml·min–1 flow rate ensured high reusability. • Conductivity remained ≤1.13 μS·cm–1 after six adsorption-regeneration cycles. • Results show resin meets industrial demands for high-purity NMP recovery.
