• Ticks actively synthesize chitin and remodel their cuticle during blood feeding, outside of the molting cycle. • Chitin biosynthesis does not drive cuticle distension during tick engorgement. • The newly synthesized chitin hardens the distending tick cuticle and helps it resist rupture under mechanical compression. • Chitin depletion during the feeding stage disrupts molting and thus represents a potential target for tick vector control strategies.
