• Dynamic reconstruction affects the actual catalytic activity and reaction mechanism. • This review discusses typical dynamic reconstruction processes of various electrocatalysts. • A strategy for constructing a dynamic structure–activity relationship considering reconstruction behavior is proposed. • Existing challenges and future development directions in the field of electrocatalyst dynamic reconstruction are outlined.
