Abstract

• An idea of adaptive variable damping FOWT with STF damper is proposed. • Nonlinear deformation and fatigue life of FOWT with damper are evaluated. • Effects of size and installation position of STF on life of FOWT are analyzed. • STF damper can significantly reduce deformation and improve life of FOWT. • A simple and useful fatigue life formula versus velocity of wind is given.
