• B-site transition metal doping regulates oxygen mobility and redox activity of LaMnO3 perovskites. • Fe doping achieves the best catalytic enhancement of coal combustion through improved lattice oxygen migration and redox cycling. • Co and Ni doping exhibit superior sulfur fixation and NOx reduction capabilities, respectively. • Oxygen vacancies, lattice distortion, and oxygen transfer capability govern the differentiated catalytic pathways.
