• Four additives were tested for anaerobic digestion of b. pulp and b. peel waste. • Zeolite and GAC_4×8 increased biogas yield by 16 to 25%. • GAC_4×8 gave the highest biogas rates: 54 and 61 mL gTVS−1·h−1 for pulp and peel. • Zeolite enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens and amino acid degraders. • GAC_4×8 promoted Methanothrix and Syntrophomonas, DIET-related taxa.
