• Gd addition enhances the corrosion resistance of Cu-Al-Ni-Mn shape memory alloys. • The Gd-rich phase induced by 0.5 wt% Gd enhances alloy corrosion resistance. • Gd enhances corrosion resistance via grain refinement and oxide film formation. • The passivation film primarily comprises CuO, Al2O3 and Gd2O3.
