• Interfacial friction between PDMS dielectric layer and Cu electrode was studied via combined experiments and simulations. • Friction coefficient of PDMS/Cu interface highly depends on Cu surface roughness, described by an empirical power-law model. • MD simulations show that higher friction arises from suppressed mobility of interfacial PDMS chains. • Ignoring interfacial friction overestimates the contact area and thus the open-circuit voltage.
