• Caproic acid yield was enhanced by 31.7% when 1 mg/L Mn²⁺ was supplemented. • A supplementation level of 20.0 mg/L Mn²⁺ resulted in pronounced over-oxidation of ethanol. • The relative abundance of Desulfovibrio was positively correlated with caproic acid production.
