• Doping MnBi effectively enhanced both coercivity and magnetization. • The melt-spinning speed critically affects the structure and magnetic properties. • The doped Cu, Mn, and Bi were enriched in different SmCo and SmBi phases. • The coercivity mechanism was dominated by multi-phase nucleation aided by pinning.
