• HVOF WC–CrC–Ni coating exhibited a dense splat morphology with well-retained carbide distribution and minimal oxitation. • Heat treatment at 300 °C induced primarily stress relaxation without significant phase transformation. • Heat treatment at 600 °C, transformations became pronounced with decarburization of WC and enhanced intersplat cohesion. • Heat treatment at 800 °C resulted in extensive phase decomposition and formation of an oxide network. • The as-sprayed condition provides higher corrosion resistance condition provides higher corrosion resistance, 600 °C maximizes hardness and 800 °C improves wear resistance.
