• Resin softening point strongly influences the performance of silica-filled SSBR/BR tire tread compounds. • Low softening point resins provide plasticization comparable to conventional TDAE oil, while high softening resins increased compound stiffness • The influence of resin softening point became more pronounced at elevated temperatures. • Hydrogenation of the resin affected its in-rubber performance compared to the non-hydrogenated counterpart. • Resin selection enabled tuning of the tire Magic Triangle performance indicators.
