• Incorporating connectedness improves reliability of dam safety evaluations. • Monte Carlo–FEM framework integrates random fields and pore connectedness. • Connected field increases flow rate but lowers exit gradient via redistribution. • Disconnected pores reduce flow but intensify exit gradient concentration. • Variance-reduction correction alters seepage failure probabilities significantly.
