• Water submersion fundamentally alters the seismic response mechanism of coral sand slopes. • Submergence suppresses high-frequency amplification and shifts peak acceleration downslope. • Sinusoidal loading generates higher excess pore pressure, especially under submerged conditions. • Lower acceleration amplification under submergence does not imply improved seismic stability.
